"Oh, don't fake it," she said, rolling her eyes. "I remember exactly how rapt you where when I gave that lecture to you and your group. You just don't know, Jianyu, how touched I am to have helped you find your inner woman."

"Those were the days," Jianyu said dryly. "You don't know how much you helped me, General. Did you really pick me for this position over the other guy because I was better at rolling my hips?"

"None better!" she chirped, entirely much too self-satisfied.

"Heaven forbid your direct subordinate be any kind of 'real' man," Jianyu teased. "Seeing as men are idiots and all."

"Oh, now, now," she retorted, waving a finger in his face. "That's not true at all. It's just the ones under my command that seem to be complete idiots."

"I'm a lovable idiot," Jianyu protested lightly, raising both eyebrows. "Can you think of another pair of hips you'd want to run our country's army with?"
That seemed to bring him out of their banter and back to the reality of the situation, as realization dawned on him. "That's... not going to be good for us politically, is it?" he asked slowly. "General Sze being dead, I mean. Once his family finds out..."

She slid back into formal conversation as easily as she had wormed out of it before. The line of her back stiffened, as she straightened from her easy slouch into the expected posture of an army's general. "It'll be a blow to our morale, of course," she said, frowning. "Especially considering that the men are already uneasy about fighting in the first place - loosing a general will be a blow for sure. But other than that we have no other choice. We had to send a general, or someone of equal ability who knew. Our choices were limited."
She hesitated, looking at the floor and unconsciously began to chew on the corner of her bottom lip. "Maybe I should've asked to go after all," she mumbled quietly.

"The decision's been made." Jianyu shrugged. "No sense in regretting it now. The best thing we can do for General Sze is make sure he comes back to this country just the way he left it." He crossed the room to face Yulin, immediately businesslike. "We'll have to come up with a strong defensive strategy, of course. Just in case."

"Defensive?" Yulin echoed, chuckling a bit. "We might even be the ones throwing the first punches - an offensive might be more appropriate. Either way, I'd like to send a scout out to survey what land we have at our disposal right now." She stood up, circling around the table until she came to her seat, listing off orders. It wasn't often that she displayed any signs of leadership in public, but it didn't mean she was incapable. "I want our list of supplies drawn up, and a recount of the number of heads we have in case we lost some deserters on the march up here. I also want an estimate of the distance to Japan and the time it would take, as well as what surrounding villages exist around here. We'll have to tell them to evacuate for their safety."

"Offensive? Is that so?" Jianyu's interest seemed quite piqued now that he realized Sze wasn't going to be the only one seeing any action. He listened to her rattle off orders, noting each in his head to complete after their meeting. "Done, done, done, and done. Do you know if General Rie was planning on informing his serving officers? They're going to be curious as to why I'm suddenly so busy."

"That, I'm not so sure of, " she said, leaning on the two back legs of her chair as she propped her feet on the table. "Either way, it's not like you'll be talking about this matter with them anyway - this is to be kept entirely under wraps, and limited to the General's tents. If they start asking though, you can tell them that I finally got you off your lazy behind."

"What a horrible thing to say," Jianyu said distractedly, noticing a large crease in Yulin's bedsheet. Sliding over to her bed, Jianyu pressed it down with his foot again. "I'm always working hard for you, General. Need anything else?" he added, with an innocent undertone that not-so-subtlely tried to prove his usefulness.

"Oh, why, in fact I do," she purred, suddenly sidling suggestively up beside him. She crept her hand up the front of his shirt until it found his collar, where she gently tugged until his ear was level with her mouth. She smiled, and said, "Before you go and carry out any of those tasks, I need you to...take those sheets and give them a good washing. I expect them back before nightfall, looking like new." She pushed him back, beaming. "This is an order."

Jianyu stumbled back, his eyes widening plaintively. "Anything else?" he asked, in a would-be nonchalant tone.

"Oh I'm so glad you asked," she sing-songed. "I would like the ink replaced on my desk - it's getting dry and sort of powdery so please grind some up for me. Also go around and make a check for our troops - in my haste I did forget to this morning. While you're at it make sure to remind the ones on duty that it's their turn today - they're a little prone to forgetting when things need to be done. Take a stop by the cook's tent and bring me my dinner - I don't think I'll have time to eat with everyone today."
