"Oh, ha-ha," Jiaming rolled her eyes at the whipping remark, smirking. But at the mention of 'plenty to do', and fired by Xiao's expression, her eyebrows raised and her head tilted a bit.
"Like what?" she prodded. "What've you been doing?" And you better not be pulling my leg, she added in her mind. The prospect of something more interesting than walking around doing nothing was very promising.

"Oh, I dunno," Xiao said nonchalantly, crossing his arms behind his head and stretching from left to right. He began to walk in the direction he came, as if to make off without explaining anything. "Y'said people were uptight here, but that only makes them better targets, y'know."

She snorted, shaking her head. "Yeah, better targets that complain to the higher-ups and--hey!"
Jiaming trotted up to his side, jabbing him with her elbow. "What do you think you're doing, just leaving like that, huh? If you've got better things to do, then by all means, allow me to tag along. What were you getting at?"

"They can't complain to anybody if they dont' know it was you!" Xiao said, reciting it like a life motto. He smirked as Jiaming matched his pace, and stopped to face her. "Hey, where d'you think you're goin'?" he taunted, stepping away from her. "No one invited you, why dont'cha go back to whippin' greenery?"

Jiaming stared at him, chewing on the inside of her cheek. What a little snot! She couldn't help but laugh.
"You got enough dirt on your pants to be certified greenery yourself," she retorted. "Besides, what could possibly be so fascinating that would have the nerve to exclude me, huh?"
Well, when Meiyu first squirmed into the army roster, she'd made a note to be as low-key and unnoticeable as possible. She forgot all about it by the second day, so that whole lie low plan has no merit whatsoever now. Like hell I'm going to just sit around here all by myself!

Xiao's eyes fell warily on the whip. It was still unfurled and seemingly harmless enough now, and he briefly wondered how long it would take Jiaming to remedy that problem, and if in that short period of time, he could haul his hide out of there fast enough. "What, you're gonna whip me or somethin'?" he asked, retreating a few feet, just in case.
"It's probably nothin' that you'd be interested in. It doesn't hold a candle to whippin' the stuffing out of things, I'm sure." He waved a hand dismissively, smiling widely. "I was just gonna go and scare some pipsqueak teammates out of their wits, or try to trip up the yaukau that lives in my tent. Y'know, that sort of thing."

Jiaming enjoyed watching Xiao back off at the prospect of a good lashing and made a note of its effectiveness for later use. She'd never actually do it--well, not brutally so.
As he listed off his options, Jiaming's eyes lit up, and she had to force herself to stand still, otherwise she would have jumped up and down like a little kid. "You speak my language, Xiao," she said with a grin almost as wide as his. "Are you sure you don't want an accomplice?"

"Oh?" he questioned, leaning forward in inquiry. The space he had put between them allowed him to do this without smaking their heads together, thankfully. He peered into her face measuringly. "Are ya good enough to be my accomplice?"

"I think the question is: Are you good enough to not have an accomplice like me?" Jiaming shot back slyly, hands on her hips.

"The answer to that's obvious," Xiao retorted, confidently. "I'm an expert at this, after all."

Jiaming snorted a laugh, stepping back and covering her mouth till she was done. Pointing a scrutinizing finger, her amused voice not matching her sudden-serious face as she spoke. "I'll be the judge of that. Prove it!"

Xiao raised his brows, looking for his part utterly unimpressed. "What makes you so special that I gotta prove anything to you?" he asked, pushing Jiaming's hand down.

"Whips aside, you mean?" she responded lightly, her expression melting into a cheeky smile. "I don't have to spin stories about my greatness when it wastes time from the now; you should just take my word for it. Just say yes!"

"Yeesh, quick to bring that thing into the fray, aren'tcha," Xiao muttered, backing off for now. "Don't be so confident, you'd have to catch me before you can even use that thing, and I'm not slow enough to be caught by the likes of you," he warned. He was half-bluffing - sure, he had confidence in himself, but he still hardly knew anything about Jiaming. "But because I'm so generous and almighty," he began, with flourish, "I guess I could spare havin' you tag along."
He sidestepped the soldier and began walking back, turning to wave him over. "C'mon then, I'll introduce you to the two weirdest guys in this entire camp."

Jiaming rolled her eyes and bowed grandly before he began to move. "It's an honor to be allowed into your company, o-proclaimed-speedy one."
She straightened and took a quick hop to catch his pace, quite pleased and excited, though she tried to smother it. At the mention of others she glanced over, interest perked.
"Really now? Gee, what a surprise that you'd hang around weirdos." She grinned.
