In comparison to the other generals, he is a more fatherly figure, his age and appearance taking some part in it. He usually trusts his men to be sensible even when not under supervision. In return, he asks for nothing more than trust and respect.
Rie has traditional Chinese views, having been raised by an almost aristocratic family, and tries to play the part of da zhang fu. He has an acute sense of justice. Being intensely patriotic as well, he will draw his sword at any snide remark. Unfortunately, Rie Chou fails to recognise the danger in the court and the sinister figure that is Sze LiuChao. Having been misled, he believes that the war is in the interest of his country. Had he known the true nature of the situation, he and his conscience would most likely have withdrawn from the war.
Historical Background
General History:
In keeping with the family tradition, Rie Chou was originally trained to take wen, in order to take a later position as an official. But he fell out of favour of the local magistrate when he pointed out a corrupt official, and moved away from his native Guangdong to pursue wu, martial arts, instead. Though he took to training much later than the other recruits, his build and determination proved well for him, and he rose through the ranks to become general.
However, he still keeps an interest in history, and the martial techniques and battles that he studied are proving useful for him. Zhuge Liang is one of his idols.
