Rie exited his tent and looked at the barren landscape in front of him. Save the jolly coloured tents of the Chinese soldiers, there was only dry, cracking soil with mere specks of vegetation. Welcome, he said to himself, to the North-East. He'd been here before, though as a man of much smaller standing. The sky and the earth was just as how he had remembered it. No ambushes, then. Full-on war.
He turned and gave orders to the closest Lieutenant General to arrange a quick roll call, just to make sure that all of the men had arrived to Songjiang safe. It was something they would have done immediately after arriving, but they all needed to drop their bags and tent poles and settle down. They seemed a good bunch, the recruits he'd gotten this time, and people didn't usually run away until they'd tasted the gritty first day of battle, or until they'd lost their first friend in combat.
Still, it didn't hurt to make sure.
With the list of his men under his arm, he walked to where a line was gradually forming. Thoughtfully, he touched his stubbly chin. Without waiting for too long, he began to go down the list. Some of the soldiers arrived late, running in to stand in line and frantically brushing down unkempt hair and tidying their uniform, tying up belts and brushing earth off their shoes. They hadn't known Rie long enough to know that he could care less about their appearance. He smiled grimly to himself.
The roll call went on uneventfully, until Rie came to a name and heard no reply.
"Xie Jun?" he called again, louder this time.
