While Xiao put in his pole, Shikang turned to place the pole into the ground. He made sure it was stabilized more than the others considering the center would take most of the weight. After double-checking he stepped back and moved his eyes down towards the canvas. Without responding to Xue he unclasped the top of one of the holders from his belt and removed a small knife from it. Approaching Xue he reached down for the rope while quietly handing the knife to the kid. "..."
"Xiao, help Xue with the canvas."

Xue knelt next to the canvas, opening his mouth to ask Shikang a question, but thinking better of it almost instantly. As Xiao approached him, he weighed the options: he didn't want Xiao to think he didn't know what he was doing, but ultimately, the thought of making a mistake in front of both of them was much worse.
"Where d'you think the best place to cut would be?" he asked Xiao in a low voice.

"Hmm?" said Xiao, scratching the back of his neck idly as he came to a stop in front of Xue, with a large piece of canvas and a knife between them. "Here, let me see," he said, gently slipping the knife out of Xue's hands and into his own, not at all noticing the younger boy's hesitation. With his other hand, he gathered up a section of the material and deposited it unceremoniously into Xue's arms. "Hold that for a while!" he said, ducking and following the edge of the heavy-duty cloth until he found the corners, cutting holes close enough to the edge to be effective, but not too close in fear the canvas would tear.

Harnessing the rope in his hand he stared at the two and watched the way they worked with the canvas. He didn't over-hear Xue's question, instead he waited for Xiao to place that part of the canvas over one of the poles to string it through.

As Xiao finished, Xue mumbled his thanks, taking the canvas towards the tent's framework. He positioned the canvas to one pole the best he could on tiptoe - it was quite a bit taller than him - and stepped back to let Shikang tie it in place.

Shikang watched Xue place the canvas over one of the poles, so he moved forward to string the rope through the holes before ducking it under to tie it tightly around the edge of it. When he was done he hooked it in another loop and repeated the pattern. After they were done with the process of the tent on each end of the poles - it was strung up perfectly over the center of the pole. It would do. At least the tent was done and over with.

Xiaoszi whistled as he took a step back and surveyed their work, hands on his hips. "Not bad!" he cheered, breaking into a crouched run and zipping through the entrance. "S'the best tent in the entire camp, I bet!" his muffled voice called.

"Y-Yeah..." Xue nodded, his lips twitching into a slight smile. "It looks good."
Surveying their handiwork, he let out a long sigh, exhaling some of the nervousness and tension. 'Well...' he thought. 'The first day wasn't too hard.' He was able to get a little confidence from that, at least... even knowing fully well that it was probably the last easy day he'd get.
