After laying there for awhile, he thought about it and heard the two speaking. Allowing the blanket to land on his head, he stripped it off to settle it on his stomach. He could've just ignored them and said nothing more but instead he moved his palms to the ground to lift himself up in a sitting position. Shikang's eyes were turned down for a moment before he lifted them up and looked at Xiao. "Perhaps you're right, Xiao. Though it could've been the other way around.. and who are you, also a left over, to talk?" Next his eyes narrowed to Xue.
"I am not here to criticize your family, kid. Just remember when you signed up for the army whose name you put on there," it was already too late. Shikang was awake as ever, no longer tired. Removing the blankets from his form he stood up and ventured outside of the tent to clear his head. Perhaps he had no right to say anything, but it did take a man to admit he was wrong.

"Jeez," said Xiao, as soon as Shikang had left the tent, "Who put poison in his food? That guy just can't relax a bit; his clothes are wrapped too tight or somethin'. It's blockin' the circulation to his head!" When this was met with only silence, he turned to glance at Xue, and knew right away from the expression on the boy's face that the other's words were weighing in his mind. Xiaoszi frowned, drumming fingers on the side of his cheek.
"Hey, squirt. Don't let 'em scare ya. I mean, this is the army and all, but s'not the end of the world." Xiao sighed exaggeratedly, and crawled back into his own sleeping space. "All this talkin' has tired me out. I'm turnin' in."

"That's not... really..." Xue shook his head, smiling at Xiao. "It's nothing. We have to work hard tomorrow, so it's probably best if we get to sleep." Moving past Xiao, Xue stuck his head outside the tent, turning to where Shikang stood.
"You can come back in, if you want... we're not going to bother you anymore."

Shikang turned his head when he heard Xue's voice, looking down to stare at the boy. He found it odd for someone to come out and say that after the things he said. Xiao did have a point, he was very difficult and stubborn to work with but with the way he was raised all responsibility would point in his direction. "Xue, you know I meant nothing by it. But I can't fail this one, for my family - I know how important it is."
After saying what he really wanted, he turned his head to look at the rest of the tents. Row-by-row. "No, I think I'll stay out here for a little longer."

"I know that. It's fine, but... you're not the only one who doesn't want to fail." Xue looked like he wanted nothing more than to run and hide under one of the blankets strewn about the tent, but he inched himself out, standing up.
"I meant it before... I-I'll work with you, and I'll do what I can. But... just try to work with Xiao and me, too." He ventured a nervous glance at Shikang. "Is that okay?"

Shikang looked over to Xue quietly, seeing how nervous the kid was. He had to admit the kid had guts to confront him about this issue. Reaching his left hand over he placed it on top of Xue's heard to ruffle the kid's hair lightly. "Yeah, it's okay."

"I-I see! That's good, then." Xue laughed awkwardly, a little taken aback. "W-Well! It's late, and I'm really tired, so I'm going to go... back in the tent, I mean... it's getting kind of cold, so d-don't stay out for too long! G'night!"
He disappeared into the tent before Shikang had a chance to respond. Flopping onto the blankets, he sighed heavily. At least all that had tired him out, somewhat.

Shikang watched the kid venture into the tent before turning his head back to look at the rows of tent once more. If this was his destiny he was doing a horrible job at it. Shaking his head he went back into the tent to sit down in his spot while laying back down. It would be better tomorrow.
