It was very late. So late in fact that Lien was probably the only person skulking about on the palace grounds, her and the guards but they really didn't count.
With all the events taking place as they were she had been instructed to 'spy' on a few people. There was information that would be necessary for certain things, and if Lien could get it without being caught it would be best. Though she was used to this, even at 15 she had been going out on nightly missions of intrigue and danger. It made her giggle inside thinking about how she was acting. Espionage was exciting for a servant girl.
The halls were dark, lit here and there with the faintest of glows. The small figure that she was pressed itself up against a door, ear melded to the wood, and listened. If she was lucky, and she would admit that she was, the information she wanted would be spoken freely without fear of spies. Thinking on it now she would have preferred to be in the room hidden away, but it was too late for that now.

Fai started to take on long sleepless nights, seeing as a familiar face haunted him whenever his eyes closed. There probably was no point to stalking the halls at night yet he did it anyways. His steps were quiet and undetectable, trained to keep his noise level down and to only considering the area around him. Everything was dark in the halls, except for mild flickers from the candlelight and the moon's rays.
He didn't expect anything to come from the palace, except for lies and deception. The halls were empty. Yet there was a moment he caught a smaller figure pressed against one of the door's frame. Oh, he knew who she was. Didn't she know that these halls were usually monitored? Without warning he took on the girl much like a predator, his right hand suddenly clamped over Lien's mouth while his right arm held onto her waist. He did this just incase she made a loud noise or tried to struggle.
Leaning his head down near to the girl's ear, he paced himself. "It's ok, Lien. It's just me," he said quickly in a whisper, trying his best to keep the alert level down.

So intent was she on the conversation behind the door that she heard nothing else around her, until it was too late. A squeal like scream came from the tony girl and she flailed about like wildcat until her 'captor' revealed himself. Thankfully he had placed his hand over her mouth, so the loud sound it would have been came out only as a soft muffled thing hardly worth notice.
Though his voice left her ear tingling she shook it off and shook him off as well. "Don't do that!" Speaking in a firm voice she glared at him, from her oh so unimpressive height. "I thought you were some kidnapper come to take me away or something. Can you not be more subtle?" She huffed at him and crossed her arms over her chest.
"What are you doing out here so late anyway?"

Quite suddenly did he crouch down and place his forefinger to his lips, telling her to keep her voice down. He knew she was upset with him but he had been around her long enough that her reactions were always loud. With his position he could stare the girl in the eyes, his own glowing within the shadows of the darkness. The question he took seriously, of course. "Yes, of course I can," knitting his brows together he gave Lien a pensive look.
"Patrolling the halls, Mrs. Che. And what are you doing out here so late? That's more important." Fai trusted the girl because she was the Empresses' servant but he didn't get to see her often.

Her brows drew together at his question and she gave him a good glare. It wasn't up to her to tell him the ins and outs of why she was out here, what bothered her most was that she had not heard him until it was too late. Shaking her head at herself she paced just barely, back and forth in front of him. Slender hands wrapped around her arms and a worried look on her face.
"I...I was doing something that was asked of me. As the Empress wishes." That was all true so she felt better for saying it. A small smile lit up her face and she looked back up and down the hall wondering what to do now. Some of the information had been gotten but she had not been able to get everything she needed and or wanted because of the interruption.

Fai leaned back when the girl gave him a glare, unsure how he offended her. When she started to pace his head moved along with her. Slowly, he took in her answer and nodded his head. Clasping his hands together he moved to stand up and motioned his left hand forward, telling her to follow him. "I suppose you won't tell me what she is looking for, will you?"

Her brows drew together for a moment and then she immediately changed expression. Eyes smiled along with the rest of her being and she seemed bouncy. All was done when it came to this and now she was in his company, which was just fine. She never got to see him enough and really liked him. He was smart and didn't mind what she did...to a point.
Following him she spoke, in a soft voice so that it would not carry. You could never be too careful in times like these. "I am not sure if I can. But I can give you a hint." One finger lay over her lips and she pursed them, thinking of how to word it best.
"Aha! I got it!" She clapped her hands and bounced a bit in her eagerness. "I was to listen for any news...erm..no wait." Again her lips pursed and she frowned. "If I happen to hear anything that may be of use. Like any plans on harming people, or making people spy or other such things." There...she hadn't been specific on that.

Fai looked down at the girl and laughed lightly at the way she mimicked the action he did when he first found her out. In a way the girl reminded him of a child whose intentions were bright - she even held the innocence of one. He couldn't help thinking that way. And to his own surprise he held out his left hand to the girl, just in case she wanted to hold his hand.
"I see. Did you detect any danger, then?" he had wanted to know ahead of time. Fai would never forgive himself if the Empress came to a death just like her husband. The haunting thought caused his chest to cave in for an instant but hastily did he remove it from his mind.

"I detect danger everywhere. It follows us where ever we go. Safety is an illusion anymore." Speaking like that made her seem far older then her years and she gave Fai a sweet yet sad smile. Seeing and hearing the things that she did made her realize such things.
Eyes went to his hand, she had not noticed it at first, and when she did her head tilted and a slight blush suffused her cheeks. Though she did not let that stop her, she slipped one of her small hands into his, instantly feeling safer. A broad bright smile now on her face. "It will be a wonderful day when we need not worry. When we can truly live in peace. But I fear days like those shall never come."

Fai squeezed the girl's hand tightly, walking ever so slowly when she spoke such negative words. No, he hadn't felt safe after Kamying died and a solemn expression appeared on his face. Should he dare to look at the beaming face of the girl's when he felt so dead inside? "Don't say such thing," Fai suddenly voiced, the tone sympathetic. At last he turned his head so his golden eyes could stare lightly at Lien's face.
"It's your smiles that keeps us hoping; it's your smiles that break the darkness. Understand that you are not alone."

She couldn't help but say such things, as they were true. Lien was not one to give out falsehoods, at least to those she trusted. Which were not many in this day and age. When he looked at her she gave him a sympathetic smile. Even if she didn't know she could tell that he was hurting and gave his hand a return squeeze. Fai was one of the nicest people she had the chance to talk to, when she actually had that chance. Usually she was too busy to do More then gossip and hear the latest news, things the Empress would always want to know.
"I know I am not alone. But maybe it would be better that way? The more people I care about the more chance for pain. My mother is taking a turn for the worse...they cant figure out what is wrong with her." She brought it up like it was old news, and sometimes it was. Her mother had been sick and declining, all the doctors she could afford to have look at her mother had no clue what was going wrong.

At the girl's words of a mother he slowly moved his other hand to the curve of his mouth, trying to hold back the sick feeling. He felt cold and washed out, barely noticing the squeeze of the girl's hand. And in response to what little consciousness he felt, his forefinger weaved under the girl's thumb. "And if you were alone you would die anyways," he fended the true fact that was taught: 'without love one will surely perish'.
Well, not that Kamying's death was explainable to the public but everyone had an idea it was from poison. The paranoia even haunted him, assuming he picked up the illness. "How would your mother feel if she knew her daughter was saying such things?"

Her face went white and eyes wide. Turning to completely face him she flailed her arms about, pulling her hand away from his. "No! My mother has enough to worry about already! Do not go telling her anything unless it is good news, happy news. I fear too much more on her mind may cause her to give up." Sighing she let her arms down and made with the wobbly eyed pleading face. "I love her but she was never the strongest woman, I do not know what still keeps her going."
Wide smile back in place she walked around him and jumped up on his back, wrapping her legs around his waist and hugging him close to her. "How are you feeling? You seem not all here. Anything I can do to help?"

Fai's brow rose in questioning, watching the girl suddenly move out of his sight. Before he could voice his curiosity he felt a sudden weight on his back, smirking at the light weight of the girl. With both arms he secured Lien's legs to his form, allowing her to stay there as he continued to walk forward just as quietly. "I'm here .. I'm just, grieving," he informed, listening to Lien's breathing patterns.
"But don't worry about me, I have faith in...." well, he didn't say the name - knowing it was almost forbidden. "We have him, I guess. I hope," surely he had doubt and wondered if Lien got to hint he was speaking of Kamlong.
