"Xie Jun," he said to Jiaming, chuckling softly at his subsequent words. He followed the soldier's hands as he waved to Shikang, but not for too long. Staring was rude, after all. From the corner of his eye, he saw Shikang's eyes had turned to him; casting his own gaze about, he let himself be distracted by a beetle on the ground crawling by his toe.
"Now," he told the beetle as he bent down to pick it up, letting it crawl onto his fingers and lifting it to cradle in his palm. "You'll get stepped on if you stay here, silly." Grinning broadly and appearing quite lost in his own world for the moment, he tapped the insect's rear with a light flick of his index finger, sending it flying with a loud clatter of shimmering wing membrane.

"Stick around with you weirdos?" Jiaming said skeptically, raising an eyebrow. She looked up, as if thinking it over heavily, but really, just trying not to laugh at how miserable Xue sounded.
"Oh, why not! It's not like--dah!" The beetle Jun had flicked grazed her nose. She sniffed and shook her head. Then she grinned down at Xue. "Can't say I'm not surprised you even offered, but I promise not to drive you crazy." --On Wednesdays. Every other Wednesday. Of summer. she added in her head, while two fingers were crossed behind her back as she gave her oath.

"I didn't say you would," Xue protested halfheartedly, trying to keep up an air of politeness while thinking about all the horrible things Xiao and Jiaming were going to do to him along the way. "Anyway... if we have to walk all day, we should get started now, hm?"

Xiao was looking over his shoulder at the men behind him, who had already begun to shuffle into action. They could barely make out the tops of their generals' heads at the front, past the taller men and their helmets, between the carts of supplies. "Yeah we better," he agreed, "Since otherwise they're gonna leave us behind." He grabbed the person closest to him by the sleeve and began moving forward.

Shikang gave Jun a flat stare, finding the other's compassion plain abnormal compared to the people they'd be fighting and killing. Instead of giving his casual agreeing statement, he decided to his ritual of silence - by turning on his foot, and starting off with the rest of the military towards their destination.

Naia turned quickly around again when he heard Jiaming jump. "Oh, I'm sorry," he apologized with a nervous grin. He wasn't terribly sociable, but the more people around him, the less he'd be noticed as an individual. He pretended not to notice Shikang's stare until the other man turned away again, making sure that his possessions were secured on his back and starting to walk.

"Yeah, yeah, just keep your secret family bug-flinging technique to yourself, alright?"
Jiaming shrugged it off lightheartedly, falling into step behind Jun. She had her fingers curled around her wound-up whip, while the jiujieban at her waist clanked with each step. To start, it was exciting to actually be going somewhere for a purpose, but she had the sneaking suspicion that she was going to be bored to tears within the next few hours. After all, one can only enjoy walking and staring at the backs of people's heads for so long...
"North, right?" she said aloud. "How far north, now? I don't like the idea of camping out in six feet of snow..."
Honestly, it didn't matter to her. So long as there was action to be had.

"I've never actually b-been north before," Xue answered, walking between Xiao and Shikang. "But I'm sure that the snow can't be that bad... I mean, we'd get buried." He looked nervous for a moment, as if he hadn't considered the possibility, but he shook it off.
"But I guess it's nice to be finally moving, huh?" he continued, changing the subject. "B-But General Sze seemed a bit concerned... I wonder if it was about the pr-- I mean, the political stuff."

Xiao elbowed Xue with a frown for the mistake, but the blow wasn't hard. He didn't mind his friends finding out about their little expedition - like Jiaming, per se, but Naia was here too. The other soldier hadn't particularly done anything rude or upsetting, but for some reason, Xiao found himself unable to relax around him, especially when Xue trusted him so much.
"Eh, it's not that bad!" he replied. He wasn't immune to freezing, but his mountain village had been pretty northward also and not as forgiving as the more southern towns in terms of weather. "S'just frozen water! The General's probably just antsy 'cause he thinks we're not ready for real trainin'!"

Shikang tightened his grasp around his belongings, closing his eyes while he listened to the pointless chatter of his teammates. He picked up Xue's stuttering - knowing very well the group of people must've made him nervous. Finally, he opened his eyes and made a slight turn so his eyes were Xiao. "If the General had doubt in us, we wouldn't be moving forward," his voice was calmed and he went back to staring forward. Although his paces started to go faster, separating himself from the lined-group. This was their chance, after all.
