Xue was about to press the issue further, not believing for a moment that his teammate was telling him the truth, but he didn't get the chance. He'd been somewhat dreading the conversation with his third teammate, given the boy's exit last night. So when Xiao's hands thudded against his shoulders, his relief almost overrode the complete and total panic response he'd grown used to.
Almost. But not quite.
"GYAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Xiao grinned, somewhat accustomed to the extremely high pitched noises their teammate was prone to making - the ones that even outdid his occasional screeches. "So you're up and about already, huh?" he greeted cheerfully, jabbing the boy lightly in the shoulder. It seemed, for the most part, as if he had completely forgotten about his anger yesterday, but the touch was a bit more reserved than usual, restraint obvious in the stiff line of his arm.
He looked at Shikang instead of meeting Xue's eyes, and raised his eyebrows at the look on the taller one's face. "What's wrong with you, Monster?"

Shikang stood at Xiao's presence, dusting his hands off on his uniform. If he was a bit more animated he would've let out an exasperated sigh, instead he frowned. "None of your business," he told Xiao firmly, giving a heads up that he no longer wanted the subject to be pressed further.

"Xiao!" Xue hissed between his teeth. "Do n... do not do that when my back is turned!" Regaining his composure, Xue ran a hand through his hair with a shaky sigh. "Sorry for the trouble yesterday. Any idea what's going on around here?"

Xiao fixed Shikang with a questioning look, but didn't press the point any further. At the very least, he seemed to have acquired some sense of tact since they had first met. The older boy had always been weird after all, and if he didn't want to share his eccentricity, Xiao wasn't about to complain.
"Aww, you're no fun," he whined, making a face like a child whose game had just been ruined. The expression offered no hint or warning to what he did next, which was to suddenly raise his hands and clamp them down on Xue's shoulders yet again, eliciting another jump. "It doesn't make that much of a difference if I do it while I'm facin' you though, does it?"
"You haven't been out that long. Nothing much has changed, but the guys are still kinda antsy about fighting really takin' place."

"Yeah, well... least I have some warning then." Xue wasn't about to tell Xiao to stop all together, he wasn't about to waste his energy on something that hopeless. Besides, he was getting used to it.
"Word got around fast, huh?" Xue looked a bit sheepish at this. "I'm sure General Sze is getting everything straightened out?" His question held a hopeful tone, but he didn't say what was really on his mind; he didn't want to let on how antsy he was to hear about any developments in the Naia situation.

Xiao cast a sideways look at Xue and frowned knowingly. It wasn't that difficult figuring out what and who was crossing the other soldier's mind right now. Xue had never exactly been the hardest person to read, and if it wasn't that obvious, then the time they had spent together was certainly enough to lend some understanding. "Yeah, everything's straightened out," he said, tone light and conversational. "They killed the spy and all."

Shikang almost piqued at Xiao's words, but instead his frown only increased. He knew Xiao was trying to make Xue feel better, but lying was probably the lowest way to go. Plus, it also tarnished the military's name - tarnished it to cruelty. "How can you say that so easily?" he snapped at Xiao, eyes narrowing. Trying ever so hard from simply using his fists to do the rest.

"... he's dead?"
Xue wished his voice didn't sound so pathetic and quiet then. Naia wasn't his friend. He had two perfectly good friends right there, and he shouldn't have been wasting his energy on someone who could've cared less about him. Nevertheless, he couldn't muster up the anger he'd been harboring towards the spy all evening, and he felt it dissolve. Along with his stomach.
He tried to pull off a smile, but it didn't spread to the rest of his face. "Oh."

Xiao didn't say anything, thoroughly abashed by Shikang's scolding. He hadn't exactly meant to hurt Xue that badly, but the careless statement was evidence enough of his lingering frustration with the boy for not having taken their warnings into actual consideration. He looked away, neither confirming nor recalling his lie, and opted to turn his face away instead, frowning at random soldiers passing by.

His gaze drifted to Xue for a second, seeing the pained expression. Not only did Xiao lie but also he had gone out of his way to hurt Xue. "That's really low of you, Xiao," he breathed out, eyes shutting tightly. Shikang only needed a few minutes to calm down but because he had been previously agitated before hand, nothing helped. Slowly, his eyes opened and he moved towards Xiao's side. Without warning his left hand snapped out and grasped his teammate's collar, bring him forward with a shake. "Tell him the truth!" he yelled at Xiao's turned face.

Xue snapped out of his guilt in an instant, his attention turned to the scene in front of him. His first instinct was to step forward and push the two apart, but Shikang's words held him back. "Shikang?" he asked hesitantly. "Xiao? What..."

"Wha..ugh!" Xiao managed, wincing instinctively as if in prepration for a strike as he was shaken. He stumbled a little, having to balance on his toes since Shikang was that much taller than he was. "Fine, fine, let go," he muttered, prying his teammate's fingers from his clothing until he could stand with his heels touching the ground again.
"You're too gullible," he said to Xue, expression tight and anything but its usual easy smile. "You believe everything." The statement was not just about this. "He's not dead. I was lying."

When Xiao thought he was safe out of Shikang's grasp he suddenly held his left hand back, in a fist, and punched his teammate square in the shoulder. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt but minutes later it would start to sting and possibly bruise. "And?" he said, wanting Xiao to apologize.

Xiao almost tripped, catching himself at the last possible minute before barrelling over. He glared at Shikang, rubbing his shoulder and feeling the muscles already protesting. "And what?!" he snapped, entertaining the thought of returning the blow for a moment, "It's not that big a deal!"
