"W-Wha?" Xue stammered, blinking. So Naia was... not dead? Xue was hit with so many reactions at once it was impossible to distinguish them: confusion, relief, annoyance, anger. The only one that didn't fade was guilt.
"... no, Shikang, he's right." Another forced smile. "It's not a big deal. It shouldn't have bothered me. I'm sure General Sze will deal with it, so let's just not talk about it, please?"

"Che, and you're a bad liar too!" Xiao burst out.

Shikang suddenly crossed his arms and sighed, not wanting to deal with their bickering. He was not going to defend the right and wrong way of lying and instead he shook his head from left to right. "Stop talking about it, Xiao," there was a warning in his voice.

"No, really." There was a note of urgency in Xue's voice now, and he twisted a loose end on the gauze around his neck, unravelling it slightly. "You can be mad at me if you want, Xiao, but can we not talk about him?"

Xiao glared at both of them, suddenly feeling as though there were boundaries set up between them that hadn't been so obvious or unbreachable before. Somehow, it only made him angrier, but he knew he had to stop. "Fine!" he said shortly. "You two are both idiots who don't like to talk about anything anyway, I don't why I bother with you! Go ahead and explode one day for all I care!" He huffed, and turned to walk away.

When Xiao started to walk away, Shikang was in step with the younger male. Without warning he slowly moved his arms to catch Xiao by the torso, lifting him up to set him back down so that he was facing Xue. That way if Xiao started to walk off, Xue would be in his way. Seeing as Xiao's reaction was frayed he suddenly placed his hand on the younger male's shoulder to turn and face him. "I apologize, but," he cut himself off when he had already punched Xiao square in the face. This time it was his dominant hand, and would surely hurt. If Xiao started to stumble back, surely Xue would catch him.

Xue did move to catch Xiao as he fell backwards, and immediately grabbed the boy by the collar and turned him around to face him. And then he stepped forward, snatching Shikang's collar and pulling him down to he was at eye level with both boys; he had to stand on his tiptoes to do so, and the effect wasn't as imposing as he might've hoped. Unnervingly, the boy was still smiling, but it was anything but happy.
"You want to talk? Let's talk. Is now a good time for you guys? Because I'm feeling really talkative all of a sudden. Do either of you realize what we must look like? The war hasn't even started yet and we're already picking fights with each other like three idiot kids."
"And you know what, Xiao? Everything you said was true. I'm gullible. I got played for a fool. I was lucky I didn't get killed. And I know that, okay, and yes, it bothers me. And it's never going to happen again, because next time, I'm going to listen to both of you, and I'm going to let you help. And if you aren't willing to do the same, then when the next time comes, none of us are going to be that lucky. So let's get started now, okay?"
He shouted the last word, then paused to take a breath. "... if that's okay with you."

He didn't have any time to regain his bearings. By the time Xue's tirade was over, his cheekbone was still smarting, and felt like it had been hit with a ram. It wouldn't make a pretty sight tomorrow. He straightened, now that the grip on his collar had become lax, and took a moment to just register everything. Did...Xue just yell at them? Things stopped making sense after that thought. "Wait, hold up. I...what? What's okay with me?" he said, looking as utterly lost as he felt. "What just...did you just collar us?"

Shikang watched the tiny male known as Xue start blabbering off about something and his eyes blinked slowly. He was going to echo Xue and asked if he was just collared but he suddenly stood up straight - towering back over the two. Shikang wasn't sure if he was supposed to be threatened by Xue's action but instead he nodded his head. "Sure, just don't touch me again," he told Xue quietly.

"... yeah." Xue let go of both boys and let out a high-pitched laugh. "Never again." Taking a step back from the pair and looking slightly off-balance, Xue turned to Xiao nervously. "Ahhh... is your face okay?"

As if unplugging a dam, Xiao broke out of his stupor and started complaining, loudly. "No it's not okay!" he yelled, rounding angrily on Shikang. "You jerk, did you have to punch that hard, if you had hit me without making it smart like some boulder just fell into my face I would've gotten the point you know! You know what this is going to look like tomorrow? I'm going to be more black and blue than normal colored! And it's smarting right now too, argh! It hurts to even talk!"

"Then stop talking and put something cold on your face, plus, I already apologized," Shikang watched Xiao skyrocket. If he had been in a better mood he would've laughed at Xiao's pain but he could tell Xue had enough of their quarrels. That was the whole point of the kid's lecture, wasn't it?

Xiao's outburst finally brought Xue back to the dull, throbbing pain that had probably been there the entire time; ranting like that was probably on the short list of stupid things to do with a throat injury. ... maybe that was a little too energetic, he inwardly admitted with a wince.
Hard as he tried, though, he couldn't seem to drum up any more animosity towards Naia for it. Just killing me would've been easier. But he didn't. Xue had been pushing that thought out of his mind for most of the day, but now he couldn't help but feel slightly better for it.
Hoping the other two hadn't heard the small noise of discomfort, he said to Xiao, "Ahh, that's no good, we'll get you something cold right away."

"Just because you apologized doesn't mean you can just go ahead and sock somebody, you freak!" Xiao protested, the inflection in his voice turning it into a borderline whine. He raised his hands and tenderly touched his face, but winced as soon as his fingers made contact. "Where are you gonna find somethin' cold?" he said, turning to Xue. It wasn't as if you could find ice so easily out in the middle of nowhere.
