"I don't think we can leave without permission," Shikang said, knowing well that rules never really mattered to him these days. "Also, don't worry about the dress. I can always get her another one on the way home," he glanced to Xue, noticing the shamed expression: embarrassment.

"Right... I haven't tried, so I don't really know the protocol," Xue said, shrugging. "And you shouldn't have to spend any more money! I should have been able to outrun the other recruits... it's a good thing none of them saw my face."

Suddenly he narrowed his eyes at the kid and shook his head in a negative response. "Money isn't an issue, keep it for yourself," Shikang wouldn't accept Xue buying another dress, or giving him money for one. He could afford it all himself.

Suddenly, it hit Xue all over again: he didn't know Shikang all that well. Sure, the man was his teammate, and they'd be working together a lot, but that didn't obligate Shikang to be Xue's friend, or even to put up with him. "I-I'm sorry!" He wrung his hands together. "I didn't mean to offend you, or... I sh-shouldn't have dragged you out like this, you're probably tired."

They were bound to bump into each other sooner or later, considering that Xue and Shikang had only been walking in circles, and those on duty were required to ritually patrol their camp border. Xiao looked up, a flash of movement having caught his eye in the middle of his conversation with another soldier on guard. "Oh, you guys!" he called out, running up to them. He was thankful for a distraction in the middle of all this boring business. "What're you doin' here?"

"Walking," Shikang answered Xiao, his eyes leaving Xue for a second. He wasn't sure why his team mate fumbled and stuttered around him. Apparently accepting the invitation from Xue wasn't good enough and no matter how hard he tried to be friendly, it never worked. Perhaps having Xiao show up was a good thing, knowing the kid could talk up a storm. At last his gaze averted back to Xue. "If I was afraid of offense I wouldn't have come along," he said, wanting to state his thoughts.

"Xiao!" Xue smiled at his friend, thankful that he hadn't flying-tackled him this time. He acknowledged Shikang's response with a small smile, not wanting to annoy him, and turned back to Xiao. "Nothing much, really... I'm off duty for now, but I couldn't think of anything else to do."

"Oh, really? Why don'tcha guys hang around with me, then? Patrol's so boring!" Xiao whined, never failing to be at a loss for words. The other soldier he had been talking with had already moved on, a hint of a somewhat thankful expression on his face at not having to listen to the other boy's ceaseless chatter. "Anyway, that guy was kinda boring, he didn't respond to anything I said and walked kinda fast."

"Wonder why," Shikang said, although knowing why the other soldier must've been so antsy to get away from the chatter. Not a lot of people had patience to deal with the boy. Sometimes Shikang wondered how long it would take for him to finally snap and bound Xiao's mouth shut.

"Of course! But... won't you get in trouble for that?" Xue asked, frowning. "If they see that you're slacking, that is."

"I'm not slacking!" Xiao was quick to reply. He slipped between them, clapped a hand on both of their backs and began ushering them into movement. "You're just gonna share my job that's all!"

Because of the hand to his back, he was pressured to move forward. Shikang could've resisted the gesture, but that would end up being too aggressive. "How nice of you to share," he mumbled.

Xue sighed, moving ahead of the pair. "If you insist... but we have to actually work, okay? No sense in being caught off--"
As Xue turned a corner, he caught the force of the solider-shaped blur full-on, knocking both him and his assailant to the ground. As Xue struggled to push the weight off, he found himself staring at a familiar, shocked-looking face.
"... Jun?" he groaned as the man scrambled off of Xue. "What were you doing? Is everything okay?"

Naia stammered, caught completely by surprise; it was almost like a deliberate assault, the blow that took his feet out from under him and sent him tumbling to the ground on top of his assailant... somehow, he wasn't all that shocked to see who had crashed into him.
"Ah... Xue," he laughed weakly, standing up and dusting off one shoulder. "I'm really sorry, I didn't see you there... I'm on patrol. Just like you, it looks like...?" He glanced at the two accompanying Xue; one, of course, that he recognized, and a second whose face he couldn't match to a name.

"Oh," said Xiao, considerably less enthusiastic. "It's you."
